About Me

Welcome to Theresa Online. Here you will find out about my various interests and the issues which are important to me.

I'm Theresa Hodge, and I live in Hastings, a seaside town in East Sussex. I've always lived in Hastings, but as many disabled people did in the 1970s and 1980s, I spent my education years at "special schools" (i.e. schools set up to cater for the needs of people with specific impairments), where I boarded for several weeks at a time. I returned home to Hastings for the school holidays, but felt that my relationships were not with people in Hastings but with those I connected with at school.

My boarding school life began in 1975 in Northwood, Middlesex, until I moved a little nearer to home to Sevenoaks, Kent in 1977. 1983 saw me moving further away from home again to an all girls school in Chorleywood, Hertfordshire, but after three years pupil numbers had dropped so low that the school began its mergr with its all boys equivalent in Worcester and I was part of the first cohort of pupils to move to Worcester in 1986. Having completed my GCSEs there in 1988, I moved again and spent my final two years in education at college in Hereford.

Given that I felt I had no particular relationships back in Hastings, at the point of leaving college I questioned whether I should, in fact, move somewhere else in the country. Would I move to live near a friend? Would this be advisable? What if my friend moved away and then I'd have nobody? No, I decided; this wasn't a good idea. I'd go back home to Hastings, get a job and some money behind me, and then if I wanted to move away later on I could do it then.

And here I am 30 years later, still in Hastings, and I'm here to stay.

Having spent just over 10 years in administrative job roles for the Local Authority and an organisation which ran various community projects around the counties of East and West Sussex, I became a Disabled People's Forum Development Worker for East Sussex Disability Association (ESDA) for two-and-a-half years before I went self-employed to provide a range of disability equality training and consultancy services.
